Broadening Pharmacist Immunization Services
Key Points
Pharmacists are currently restricted to only being able to administer vaccinations to patients aged 11 years and up, limiting accessibility for younger children. Current legislation regarding pharmacist administered immunizations limits the vaccines being given to a non-inclusive list, hindering the administration of other commonly needed vaccines without a prescription.
What is the issue?
Immunization List – Indiana law currently restricts pharmacists to a specified list of immunizations that can be administered without a prescription. Problem – This list is not reflective of ACIP Guidelines which would allow pharmacists to prescribe and administer more vaccines.
Age Restriction – Pharmacists in Indiana are restricted to administering vaccines to patients aged 11 years and older. Problem – This age requirement prevents broader accessibility to pediatric patients and creates unnecessary barriers. A majority of states have younger age restrictions, expanding care and reach.
Revising immunization language to reflect ACIP guidelines and provide more consistency with surrounding states allows for greater access to vaccinations for Indiana residents, reducing burden and cost.
Next Steps for Indiana
Pass legislation to remove the current list of vaccines and the age requirement to increase access and patient autonomy for Indiana residents.
