IPA Visit to Manchester University
On Wednesday, November 30th, Executive Vice President, Darren Covington, and his two APPE students had a site visit to Manchester University in Fort Wayne, IN. Manchester University recently bought all its pharmacy students a membership with Indiana Pharmacy Association (IPA). Darren wanted to visit the students and introduce them to all of the perks that come with an IPA membership and invited two Parkview pharmacists to speak on residency preparation. Parkview Hospital is a proud corporate member of IPA.
P1, P2, P3, and P4 students attended the information session on Wednesday. They started the meeting with a fresh slice of pizza and a brief introduction to the history of IPA. Darren wanted the students to know how the association came about and its current mission statement. Following the introduction, Darren went on to discuss how the students can become involved in IPA and all of the legislative initiatives that IPA is currently working on. The students followed up with lots of questions and were looking forward to becoming more involved within the organization.
During the second half of the event, Sarah Ferrell, PharmD, and Bhavika Patel, PharmD shared their experiences and insights with the students regarding fellowships, residencies, Midyear events, interviews, CV, and much more. Dr. Patel is doing her PGY2 in ambulatory care and Dr. Ferrell is an informatics pharmacist at Parkview. The presentation was done in Q&A format, where students were able to freely ask any questions they had in mind. Both pharmacists talked about the etiquette surrounding residency showcases when to think about pursuing residency or fellowship and gave the students advice on preparation.
The students were very engaged and the speakers were able to answer lots of questions throughout the presentations. The Indiana Pharmacy Association is looking forward to continuing to work with the students of Manchester University and building up future practitioners in the state of Indiana.
